IDC released a report showing that Samsung is the current leading manufacturer of Smartphone devices, shipping more than twice that of Apple.

Interestingly, this doesn't quite echo our findings in the 51Degrees web usage data. Although being behind Samsung in the 'units shipped' category, Apple are still on top of our web usage charts, with more than twice the smartphone web traffic than Samsung.

Mashable stated the 4 biggest hardware rivals for Samsung as: Apple, LG, ZTE and Lenovo, however when looking at smartphone web traffic, we can see that the real usage rivals are actually HTC, Sony, Motorola and LG.

HTC have had a difficult year, with the release of their flagship HTC One device being heavily delayed. Smartphone web traffic from HTC devices is still managing to hit the top 3 and increasing their gap to more than double that of their nearest rival: Motorola.

It is not looking likely that Samsung will overtake Apple's Smartphone web traffic any time soon, but if they keep increasing sales we will certainly see a much more contested battle for first place.
